Great Dunmow
is the home of the Ancient Dunmow Flitch Trials

The Flitch Trials; Married couples battle it out under oath to convince a jury that 'in 12 month and a day' they have 'not wished themselves unmarried again'. Couples who satisfy the jury of six maidens and six bachelors of Dunmow, walk away with the 'flitch' - a side of bacon. Locals dressed as humble folk then parade the victors shoulder-high through the streets atop a wooden seat, known as the Priors Chair,
and much merrymaking ensues.
The trials actually started in Little Dunmow, some 3 miles from the town, around 1120 but since 1855 they have taken place in Great Dunmow.
